Subject: Please call Japan's Prime Minister Fukuda to stop whaling
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

President George W Bush
Bundeskanzler Angela Merkel
Dear Heads of State,
On Sunday 18 November the Japanese whaling fleet left port in order to sail to the Southern Ocean and kill over a thousand whales, including endangered fin whales and vulnerable humpback whales. Their "research" has been condemned by scientists worldwide, and even the International Whaling Commission - of which you are a member - has urged Japan to end its so-called scientific whale hunt in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, because the results of that research are simply not needed.
Greenpeace is currently pursuing the fleet from Japan to the Southern Ocean where they will put themselves between the harpoons and the whales to stop individual whales being killed.
I know that your government has opposed the Japanese whaling programme in the past, but now we are facing their biggest hunt since the moratorium on commercial whaling came into force nearly twenty years ago. And I fear this will only escalate further.
At the departure of the fleet ceremony in Shimonoseki on Sunday, the head of the Japanese Fisheries Agency, Shuji Yamada, said "The scientific research we carry out will pave the way to overturning the moratorium on commercial whaling, which will better help us to utilize whale resources."
The Japanese government has invested a huge amount of taxpayers money and diplomatic effort in trying to overturn the moratorium on commercial whaling. All I am asking you to do is spend ten minutes of your time picking up the phone to Prime Minister Fukuda and register a protest at the HIGHEST level. In fact, to save you a couple of those ten minutes - here's his phone number: +81-3-3581-0101.
You have repeatedly said that whaling in the Southern Ocean must end. Greenpeace activists are putting themselves on the line for this. All we ask of you is one phone call.
